In August 2025, Greener Cities Collective carried out a targeted tree planting initiative at Government Science and Technical College, Garki.
The project combined fruit-producing and high carbon-absorbing trees to improve biodiversity, shade, and future food value while giving students practical sustainability experience.
Trees Planted: 20
Timeline: 1-2 days (implementation + engagement)
Fruit Trees: Mango, Guava, Orange, Pawpaw, Pomegranate
Carbon-Absorbing Trees: Neem, Terminalia, Casuarina
Participants: Students (12-18), teachers, GCC team, and volunteers
The project prioritized climate suitability, nutritional value, and long-term canopy potential, with planting distributed along walkways and gathering areas.
Work included site preparation, planting-point marking, digging, tree planting with students, and initial mulching/watering.
Student sessions covered climate regulation, food systems, and stewardship, while teachers supported coordination and post-implementation oversight.
What worked: A focused scope and student participation kept delivery efficient and highly engaging.
Challenges: Early watering and protection of young trees needed stronger structure.
Recommendations: Establish a student stewardship team, add protective guards, and maintain a regular watering and monitoring schedule.
