In August 2025, Greener Cities Collective carried out a targeted tree planting initiative at Government Technical Science College, Maitama.
The project focused on fruit-producing and high carbon-absorbing trees to combine climate action with long-term nutritional and economic value for the school community.
Trees Planted: 20
Timeline: 1-2 days (implementation + engagement)
Fruit Trees: Mango, Guava, Orange, Pawpaw
Carbon-Absorbing Trees: Neem, Terminalia, Casuarina
Participants: Students (12-18), teachers, GCC team, and volunteers
The team selected GTSC Maitama for available open space and long-term growth potential, then distributed planting points across walkways and open fields for future canopy shade.
Activities included site clearing, planting-point marking, digging, planting with student participation, and initial mulching/watering support.
Students took part in practical sessions on climate change, carbon absorption, food systems, and long-term stewardship, while teachers supported coordination.
What worked: The focused tree-only scope improved execution speed, and combining fruit and climate trees increased practical value.
Challenges: Early-stage watering structure and tree protection needed stronger planning.
Recommendations: Create a school tree stewardship group, install simple protective barriers, and run periodic growth check-ins.
